The Joint Border Analytics (JBA) team combines technology and expertise from across three border agencies including MBIE, New Zealand Customs Service and the Ministry for Primary Industries to contribute to more accurate risk assessment at the border and smarter targeting across all people, goods and crafts. It is a diverse and innovative team dedicated to introducing new technology and techniques into border risk assessment.
We are looking for an experienced Data Scientist to carry out advanced modelling and operational algorithm development. You will source information, leverage your understanding of supervised, unsupervised, reinforced and deep learning models to undertake complex statistical and pattern analysis including identification, preparation and delivery of analytical output.
We are looking for someone who is experienced in the use of specialist data mining and analytics software (preferably open source based) and has experience quantifying the benefits of advanced analytics to conduct complex analyses of large amounts of data.
You are experienced in using analytics modelling in a risk and/or operational environment.
You\ 're able to translate complexand technical information to be easily understood by non-technical staff.
You have a background in delivering tailored data solutions and creating value through the use of advanced modelling and statistical analysis.
You are personable and inquisitive by nature, and your peers value your ability to resolve interesting problems, while key stakeholders rely on your guidance and advisory capabilities.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*.
(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application;
OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries:
either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ Drivers\ ' licence.
